 The

Georgian National Museum and the National Museums to Berlin, Foundation Prussian Cultural Heritage are going to start the EU Twinning project “Support to the Institutional Development of the Georgian National Museum” from the mid of June. This is the first Twinning project in the field of the cultural sector.

It belongs to the principal purposes of the project to strengthen the Georgian National Museum as an institution which is enabled to speed up culture as an essential component by the development of Georgia. For this it is laid within the Twinning project value on the systematic introduction of the best practices in the activities of the Georgian National Museum – particularly on the fields of museum’s buildings planning, collection removal and the restoration and conservation of objects. With the collaboration within the scope of this Twinning project a unique possibility arises in the collaboration between two cultural facilities of national importance.

We would like to invite you to the kick off meeting, which will be held on the June, 22nd in the Georgian National Museum in Georgia from 11.00 a.m.

The Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation

The Foundation is one of the world's major cultural organisations. The State Museums of Berlin, the State Library, the Secret State Archives Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, the Ibero-American Institute and the State Institute for Music Research, all with their origins in the collections and archives of the State of Prussia, are linked to form a close network for cultural transmission.

From the beginning it was scholars and artists rather than princes and kings who gave the collections their distinctive profile. Although individual treasures such as the world-famous Pergamon Altar or the bust of Nefertiti draw the attention, the encyclopaedic range and ordered structure of the collections as a whole reflect an all-embracing interest in education.

The preservation and care of the collections, their structure and development, and the continuation of academic and scientific research form the basis for a mediation of cultures with a mission to encourage learning and understanding between different peoples.

The Museumsinsel (Museum Island)

The Museumsinsel (Museum Island), considered as a unique ensemble of an educational landscape, represents 100 years of museum architecture in the middle of Berlin. The reunification of Germany opened up the historically unique opportunity to reunite the collections which had been divided between East and West. In 1999 UNESCO placed Museumsinsel under its protection as a "World Cultural Heritage" site.

The Museumsinsel is situated on the northern part of an island in the centre of Berlin in the River Spree and has an area of almost one square kilometre. On this island, over 600,000 years of human history are presented in a temple city of art and culture. The archaeological museums will be connected with one another at their base level both spatially and thematically by the Archaeological Promenade. This is the contextual bond which will present the cultures of the ancient occidental world in an overall, interdisciplinary display. In a main circuit in the Pergamon Museum the large streams of visitors will be presented the major exhibits of the Berlin Museums, i.e. the monumental architecture of the old world. At the same time, these exhibits each continue to be connected spatially with the associated collections. Each building, which also has its own entrance, offers individual visitors a direct, undisturbed, intensive encounter with its collections.

The Georgian National Museum

The Georgian National Museum is a complex of ten museums and two research institutes. Together they constitute a rich network devoted to the fine arts, archaeology, ethnography, and natural history. The present legal status of the GNM was created by presidential decree in December 2004, but its oldest constituent member was established as early as 1852.

The GNM acts as a research base and centre for scholarly excellence. Its mission is to uphold the highest standards of research, conservation and presentation of Georgia’s cultural and natural heritage; to increase public involvement; to maintain an effective organizational structure; and to ensure the sustainability of the institution. One way in which the GNM hopes to accomplish these goals is through constructive collaboration with other cultural, educational, and research institutions as well as with the private sector.

The Georgian National Museum’s highest aim, however, is to play a major role in the cultural life of the country and to present Georgia’s rich heritage to a wide audience through exhibitions, educational programmes, and publication.
